7 Things to Avoid on Oahu | Don’t Make These Hawaii Travel Mistakes

You booked that plane ticket and have your bags packed for Hawaii. Hawaii is synonymous with paradise, and most people save up an entire lifetime to experience everything the island has to offer. And holy moly, you’re finally doing it!

Now, I was born, raised, and have lived here on Oahu for most of my life. I want you to make the most of your time here and not squander your precious vacation by making the same mistakes that I see countless tourists make time and time again. That’s why I put together this list of seven things to avoid on Oahu.

Before I go any further, everything I mention here are my personal opinions and are completely subjective. You don’t have to listen to a dummy like me, and please feel free to spend your vacation however you deem fit. With that being said, I can almost guarantee if you avoid these seven things, that you’ll have a much richer experience overall.

7 Things to Avoid on Oahu:

1. Spending the whole time in Waikiki
2. Trying the same ho-hum food
3. Not renting a car
4. Rush hour traffic
5. Attending a luau
6. Major sunburn
7. Rushing

Waikiki is most famous for Waikiki Beach, which is one of six beaches in the district, along with Queen's Beach, Kuhio Beach, Gray's Beach, Fort DeRussy Beach and Kahanamoku Beach. Waikiki Beach is almost entirely man-made. Waikiki was the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1795 to 1796.

This past December, I took my mother on a 10-day adventure to Kauai, Hawaii! I planned a packed itinerary to explore as much of the Hawaiian island possible; from Kapa'a and Poipu to the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon. We found the best places to eat and best hiking trails in Kauai thanks to local advice from Hawaiian friends on Instagram.
In my humble opinion, these are the best things to do in Kauai!
I want to come back to Kauai again and do the full, 11-mile Kalalau trail, and discover more of the Waimea Canyon and Napali Coast. I would also like to return to discover the best beaches in Kauai!

Honolulu Travel Guide 2021 - Best Places to Visit in Honolulu Hawaii United States in 2021

Honolulu, on the island of Oahu’s south shore, is capital of Hawaii and gateway to the U.S. island chain. The Waikiki neighborhood is its center for dining, nightlife and shopping, famed for its iconic crescent beach backed by palms and high-rise hotels, with volcanic Diamond Head crater looming in the distance. Sites relating to the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor include the USS Arizona Memorial. 

Hawaii is a state in the Western United States located in the Pacific Ocean about 2,000 miles from the U.S. mainland. It is the only state outside North America, the only state composed entirely of islands, and the only state in the tropics.

The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
