Search and rescue teams are heading door-to-door looking for survivors and casualties of the wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The death toll was 96 as of August 14. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, that’s the most deaths in a fire on American soil since 1918, and authorities say that number may continue to go up. Officials estimate the rebuilding of Lahaina and other parts of Maui will cost upwards of $5 billion.

Hawaii officials worked painstakingly to identify the 99 people confirmed killed in wildfires that ravaged Maui and expected to release the first names Tuesday, even as teams intensified the search for more dead in neighborhoods reduced to ash.

Cindy McMillan, the spokesperson for Hawaii’s Joint Information Center, discusses the search and rescue process.

Come on a narrated walking tour of the town of Paia in Maui, Hawaii. Paia is a historical plantation town with around 2,500 people. It was once home to the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar mill from 1880 to 2000. Today, Paia has many colorful buildings and known as the hippiest town in Maui. The town center area has several restaurants, art galleries, surf shops and specialty gift shops. Paia is the first town on the Hana Highway when heading eastbound towards Hana. The death toll in the firestorm destroying the town of lahaina on Maui reached 89 on Saturday, making it the deadliest wildfire in the U.S. in more than a century.

Donations are coming in from across the state but as Neetu Garcha report, getting them to those who need them is a challenge.

It is the state’s deadliest natural disaster in decades, surpassing a 1960 tsunami that killed 61 people.

The death toll has reached 93 in this week’s wildfires on Maui and there are warnings it could rise further. The US Fire Administrator said the Lahaina Fire is now the deadliest in over 100 years.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has described the fires as the 'largest natural disaster Hawaii has ever experienced.' He said around 2,200 structures have been destroyed or damaged and the losses 'approach $6 billion.'
The highway into the hard-hit Lahaina area remains highly restricted, with only a trickle of vehicles allowed into the historic town Saturday morning. Residents slept in a mile-long line of cars overnight, hoping to enter.

Hawaii officials held a news conference Monday night to give updates on the wildfire response in Maui. Gov. Josh Green told CBS News that it could take 10 days for a full death toll to be determined as crews could find "10 to 20 people per day probably until they finish."

At least 106 people have died as fast-moving wildfires tear through the Hawaiian island of Maui, officials say. The deaths in the city of Lahaina, the island's main tourist destination, came as strong winds from a distant hurricane fanned the flames. The fire is one of several ongoing blazes that have burnt entire neighbourhoods to the ground.
