Dutchman Joran van der Sloot, a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of an American teenager, will be extradited from Peru to face criminal charges in the US, according to media reports. He is currently in Peru serving 28 years in prison for homicide of a 21-year-old Peruvian woman named Stephany Flores. American Natalee Holloway, 18, went missing during a school trip in Aruba. Van der Sloot faces federal wire fraud and extortion charges in the US. In a statement reported in US media, Holloway's family said Peru has agreed to temporarily extradite Van der Sloot do he can "answer for his crimes". In the US, Van der Sloot is accused of taking $25,000 from Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, in exchange for information regarding the whereabouts of the 18-year-old's body.
Prosecutors say the money was paid but no information was revealed. Natalee Holloway's body was never found. She was officially declared deceased in 2012 by an Alabama judge. She was in Aruba on a high school graduation trip in May 2005 when she vanished. She was last seen leaving a bar with Van der Sloot. Van der Sloot was arrested but never charged in connection with Holloway's disappearance.

The chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway has admitted he killed her and disposed of her remains in the sea. Joran van der Sloot’s confession comes as part of a plea deal with prosecutors on extortion charges. Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty Wednesday to trying to extort money from Holloway’s mother in exchange for revealing the location of her daughter’s body. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for extortion and wire fraud but is not charged in Holloway’s death or disappearance. U.S. Judge Anna Manasco said she considered van der Sloot’s confession to Holloway’s murder and destruction of her remains in her sentencing decision.

Beth Holloway said Joran van der Sloot admitted to killing her daughter and disposing of her body as part of his deal.

The prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway flashed a smile as he was handed over to US authorities early Thursday.

Joran van der Sloot, 35, took off from Peru’s Jorge Chavez International Airport around 8 a.m. local time in the company of agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Fox News Digital reported.

Photos from the proceedings show the Dutch national appearing to smile in an Interpol vest alongside armed guards.

Van der Sloot has been in prison in Peru for more than a decade after pleading guilty to the May 2010 murder of student Stephany Flores.

He is being extradited to Birmingham, Alabama, on charges of defrauding and extorting Natalee Holloway’s mother, Beth Holloway, that same year.

Natalee Holloway was beaten to death on a beach in Aruba and her body pushed out to sea after refusing the advances of the chief suspect in the 2005 killing, who admitted to the murder before pleading guilty Wednesday to extorting money from the missing teen’s mother.

Although Joran van der Sloot isn’t charged in Holloway’s death, his confession may finally resolve a case that has captivated the public’s attention for nearly two decades, spawning extensive news coverage, books, movies and podcasts.

"As far as I’m concerned, it’s over," Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, told reporters outside the federal courthouse in Alabama. "Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter’s murder. He is a killer."

Natalee Holloway went missing during a high school graduation trip with classmates. She was last seen on May 30, 2005, leaving a bar with van der Sloot, a Dutch citizen and student at an international school on the Caribbean island where he grew up. He was questioned in the disappearance but never prosecuted. A judge declared Holloway dead, but her body was never found.

Van der Sloot, now 36, pleaded guilty to the extortion and fraud charges in exchange for a 20-year sentence. That prison term will run concurrently with a 28-year sentence he's serving in Peru for killing Stephany Flores in 2010.

U.S. Judge Anna Manasco said the details of his confession factored into her sentencing decision.

"You have brutally murdered — in separate instances years apart — two young women who refused your sexual advances," she said.

Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty Wednesday morning in federal court for wire fraud and extortion. The charges are in connection to Van der Sloot taking money from Natalee Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway, in exchange for information about the teenager's disappearance in Aruba. The Mountain Brook graduate went missing in 2005 while on a class trip.

As part of the plea agreement, Van der Sloot had to truthfully disclose what happened to Natalee Holloway. Those details had to be corroborated.
