Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot will face trial for alleged extortion and wire fraud, charges stemming from the Holloway case. Holloway, who lived in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, was 18 when she was last seen during a trip with classmates to Aruba. She vanished after a night with friends at a nightclub, leaving a mystery that sparked years of news coverage and countless true-crime podcasts. She was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot, then 18 years old.

(AP) A U.S. judge says the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway has admitted he killed her and disposed of her remains. The admission comes as part of a plea deal with prosecutors on extortion charges. Joran Van Der Sloot pleaded guilty Wednesday to trying to extort money from Holloway’s mother in exchange for revealing the location of her daughter’s body. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for extortion and wire fraud but is not charged in Holloway’s death or disappearance. U.S. Judge Anna Manasco said she considered van der Sloot’s confession to Holloway’s murder and destruction of her remains in her sentencing decision.

Dutchman Joran van der Sloot, a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of an American teenager, will be extradited from Peru to face criminal charges in the US, according to media reports. He is currently in Peru serving 28 years in prison for homicide of a 21-year-old Peruvian woman named Stephany Flores. American Natalee Holloway, 18, went missing during a school trip in Aruba. Van der Sloot faces federal wire fraud and extortion charges in the US. In a statement reported in US media, Holloway's family said Peru has agreed to temporarily extradite Van der Sloot do he can "answer for his crimes". In the US, Van der Sloot is accused of taking $25,000 from Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, in exchange for information regarding the whereabouts of the 18-year-old's body.
Prosecutors say the money was paid but no information was revealed. Natalee Holloway's body was never found. She was officially declared deceased in 2012 by an Alabama judge. She was in Aruba on a high school graduation trip in May 2005 when she vanished. She was last seen leaving a bar with Van der Sloot. Van der Sloot was arrested but never charged in connection with Holloway's disappearance.

Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the unsolved disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in 2005, has confessed to killing her and disposing of her remains before trying to extort the girl's grieving family, court documents state.

The initial revelation came via U.S. Judge Anna Manasco Wednesday during a sentencing hearing in U.S. federal court where van der Sloot, 36, agreed to plead guilty to charges accusing him of extortion and wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors accused van der Sloot in a 2010 indictment of hatching a plot to sell information about the whereabouts of Holloway’s remains to her grieving family in exchange for $250,000. The Dutch national, who had been serving a 28-year prison sentence in South America for the murder of a Peruvian businesswoman in 2010, was extradited to the U.S. in June to stand trial in the Northern District of Alabama.

The prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of the late American teen Natalee Holloway will be extradited to the US as soon as Tuesday to face extortion and fraud charges, said officials in Peru, where Joran van der Sloot has been serving time for the murder of a Peruvian woman.

Separately, he was convicted in 2012 of murdering Stephany Flores, 21, in his Lima hotel room and sentenced to 28 years in prison.

The chief suspect in the disappearance of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, Joran van der Sloot was extradited from Peru for a court appearance in Alabama on Friday. Van der Sloot is not charged in Holloway's disappearance. However, in 2010, U.S. prosecutors said the Dutch citizen reached out to Holloway's mother, Beth, and asked for money in exchange for disclosing the location of her daughter's body. Van der Sloot pleaded not guilty to one count each of extortion and wire fraud.
