Joran van der Sloot, the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, arrived in the United States from Peru on Thursday to face charges that he attempted to extort money from the missing teen’s mother.
An FBI-operated plane carrying van der Sloot landed at Birmingham’s Shuttlesworth Airport about 2:30 p.m. — just hours after Peruvian authorities handed him over temporarily to US custody — and the suspect was escorted down the steps into a black SUV, which brought him to a local jail.
Van der Sloot is scheduled to be arraigned in federal court in Birmingham at 11 a.m. Friday, according to court records.
Kevin Butler, an attorney listed as van der Sloot’s public defender, did not return an email seeking comment on the case.
The suspect has been serving a 28-year sentence in Peru after confessing to killing a Peruvian woman.

Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an American, who vanished while on a class trip in Aruba, will be extradited to the United States from Peru, her family said Wednesday.
Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway, announced the news in a statement.
"Almost exactly eighteen years later, her perpetrator, Joran van der Sloot, has been extradited to Birmingham to answer for his crimes," she said.
Peruvian authorities agreed to extradite Van der Sloot, who is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the murder of a 21-year-old Peruvian Stephany Flores in 2010.

In the U.S., the long-suspected killer of an Alabama teen in 2005 has admitted to her murder.
Dutchman Joran van der Sloot on Wednesday admitted to killing Natalee Holloway on a beach on the Caribbean island of Aruba and dumping her body into the ocean.
Van der Sloot's confession came as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in an extortion case with Holloway's family.
He was accused of trying to extort 250-thousand dollars from Natalee's mother for information about her death.
Van der Sloot has been sentenced to 20 years in prison on the federal charges but has not been charged with Holloway's murder, which falls outside of U.S. jurisdiction.
His sentence will run concurrently with a 28-year sentence he was given by a Peruvian court for killing a local woman there in 2010.

Joran van der Sloot, the main suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, and his father rented a boat and “took care of things,” he claimed in a newly obtained email sent two days after the teen vanished.
Days after the Alabama teen disappeared during a class trip to Aruba, van der Sloot wrote to someone named “David G,” claiming, “My dad got a boat two days later,” the Messenger reported Saturday.
“We went for a ride and took care of things. That’s all I’m going to say,” the email read.
Van der Sloot was extradited to the US in June to face fraud and extortion charges tied to the disappearance of Holloway, 18.
She was last seen leaving a bar with the then-17-year-old Van der Sloot, who was identified as a suspect in her disappearance but never charged in connection with her death.

Joran van der Sloot, prime suspect in Natalee Holloway case moved to new prison ahead of extradition
(AP) The chief suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway is being transferred to a prison near Peru's capital ahead of his pending extradition to the United States to face charges linked to her vanishing, officials said Saturday.
The government of Peru, where Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot was serving a 28-year sentence for the murder of a Peruvian woman, authorized his extradition to the U.S. in May.
Máximo Altez, van der Sloot’s lawyer, said is client was being taken by land from the Challapalca prison in Peru's southern Andes to the Piedras Gordas prison on the outskirts of Lima.
“In the coming days, the INPE (National Penitentiary Institute) will hand over the condemned man to Interpol Peru with the goal of handing him over to U.S. authorities from the FBI,” said a statement from the INPE released Saturday.
Altez said that once the bureaucratic procedures are completed and van der Sloot is given a medical exam, his client will be transferred to the U.S. He estimated the extradition could take place on Tuesday, but Peruvian officials did not confirm this day.
Van der Sloot has agreed to be sent to the United States where he faces trial for alleged extortion and wire fraud charges linked to the Holloway case, his lawyer said.
When asked by the Associated Press why his client agreed, the lawyer responded: “He is imprisoned in the worst prison in the world,” referring the maximum-security Challapalca prison.

Joran van der Sloot, the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, pleaded not guilty Friday to federal charges that he tried to extort money from the missing teen’s mother in exchange for revealing the location of her body.
Van der Sloot, 35, was extradited to the United States on Thursday from Peru, where he is serving a 28-year prison sentence after confessing to killing a Peruvian woman. He was arraigned in Birmingham, not far from the suburb where Holloway grew up, in his first court appearance in the case.
Natalee’s mother, Beth Holloway, watched the brief proceeding from the third row of the courtroom. She stared occasionally at van der Sloot but showed no obvious emotion.
Afterward, she hugged friends who had come to offer their support along with Natalee’s father and brother. She declined to comment to reporters outside the courthouse.
"It's just surreal," George Seymore, spokesperson for Beth Holloway, told The Associated Press outside the courthouse. "18 years to the day almost, and to have Joran van der Sloot here in Natalee Holloway's hometown, finally to have justice served. It's just surreal."

And while that case is still officially unsolved, just five years after that, Joran was involved in yet another sensational case….the murder of Stephany Flores Ramírez down in Lima, Peru in 2010. While denying him and his friends’ involvement in Natalee’s questionable disappearance, Mr. Van Der Sloot did confess to the bludgeoning of Stephany in June 2010 as the video evidence against him was damning. At only 25 years old, Joran was then sentenced to 28 years’ in prison for killing Miss Flores.
