They are also the largest land mammals in the family Elephentidae : Elephas and Loxodonta. There are three recognised species of Elephants -- The African bush elephant, The African forest elephant and the Indian / Asian elephant. The other species of Elephantidae are extinct since ice age. <br /><br />Elephants give birth after every 22 months, longest for any earth animal. A healthy newborn weighs around 105 kgs and has a lifespan of 50 to 70 years. Elephants are considered to be a symbolof wisdom in Asia and are known for their intelligence which is thought to be equal to Dolphinns. Aristotle once said the elephant was "the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind.
