How art and activism are connected. Topic:
"Through the lens of art: seeing the world of activism"
or "Art is a form of activism."
Importance:
Being an activist is commonly misinterpreted as giving speeches, attending strikes or belonging to a worldwide organization, when in reality this is far from the truth. Art plays a key role in the world of activism; it brings life to movements and a visual aspect words can't achieve. It spreads messages quickly which is crucial to spreading the word in any social issue; the more people are aware, the more people can enact change This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The former US president Barack Obama has spoken against call-out culture. 'I do get a sense sometimes now among certain young people ... that the way of me making change is to be as judgmental as possible about other people and that's enough.' Obama said that achieving change was a much more difficult issue than simply using social media. 'That is not activism, that is not bringing about change. If all you're doing is casting stones, you are probably not going to get that far,' the 44th US president said at the thir Obama Foundation summit on Tuesday.

Grant writing for a nonprofit organization? In this video I show how I’d approach a real grant application for a nonprofit. #Nonprofits #Grants #Nonprofit

Whether you’re starting a nonprofit organization or fundraising for an existing nonprofit, grants are one of many options for funding or expanding special project or program. Still, writing grants can be tough and confusing! I’ve written over 100 grants throughout my nonprofit work - won some and lost some, and learned a lot about how to write grants along the way.

In this video I show how I’d approach writing a grant proposal for the Max & Victoria Dreyfus Foundation.

I hope this helps as you undertake nonprofit fundraising!

The best way to make impactful art or be a true ally for a cause is to explore your own challenges with being a better person. We must understand the importance of discerning what we have been taught to think and what we believe based on our own value system. We will also look at literature on personal growth and leadership. Next, we must alter our thoughts and actions to better align with the vision we have for change. This is where we will look at social change campaigns and challenge their effectiveness, then look at deleting old prejudices we have about ourselves and others to understand the importance of being genuine when trying to influence positive change. Born out of the rubble of WW II, UNICEF has promoted children’s rights and has a presence in over 190 countries and territories, helping to save more children’s lives than any other humanitarian

However dire the circumstances, UNICEF has always stood for hope, because we know that — with commitment over time — we can accomplish real progress for the world's children.

Social activists have digitized the civil rights movement, changing the course of race and politics from the comfort of their smartphones. More than just tweets and shares, these small efforts combine to create tangible change in society. From better casting choices in big budget Hollywood films to more authentic dining experiences at high-end restaurants, social activism is a vehicle for change and progress. Is it all smoke and mirrors or have the “SJWs” tapped into something deeper?

Ranier Maningding is a Filipino-American advertising copywriter and writer for The Love Life of an Asian Guy (LLAG), a growing social media platform for race, politics and pop culture. Created in 2008, LLAG started as a Wordpress blog for Maningding to debunk myths about Asian male identities and stereotypes through candid stories about his college dating life. After the shooting of Michael Brown in 2014, Maningding saw a lack of solidarity from the Asian-American community and shifted the focus of LLAG from dating to politics, to help combat injustice toward the Black community and push against the grain of white supremacy. Since 2014, LLAG has grown from 2,000 to 200,000 readers, reaching upwards of 11 million timelines per week. Maningding’s work has been featured in The Huffington Post, Mic, Buzzfeed and he continues to speak at Universities around the country.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, inequality is on the rise, but so is grassroots activism. More and more individuals and groups are taking action and using their voices to tackle the growing social and economic inequalities.
Social movements and activists engage with, challenge, and seek to shape policy processes and wider political transformations to tackle inequalities through forms of mobilisation as well as everyday forms of action and resistance. From racial justice to climate emergency and women’s rights, they are imagining and building more equal, just, and sustainable societies all across the world.
Looking beyond just forms of resistance, this panel will discuss the role of activists and social movements in today’s world and examine their agency in imagining utopian futures and creating change. How are social movements providing creative spaces for not only challenging inequalities but also coming up with alternative ideas for solutions to address the problems they are fighting against? And how and to what extent are these ideas informing policy changes? #lsefestival

Turning the Page examines the efforts of organizations working outside mainstream film and television to produce and distribute stories that are by, for, and about LGBTQ people. These organizations harness the power of counter-storytelling to transform the media landscape and combat the hegemonic narratives that have oppressed LGBTQ people for generations. Combining close analysis of film and television content with interviews of industry professionals, Turning the Page demonstrates how queer storytelling in visual media has the potential to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and motivate social justice activism.

Art-based activism, or Artivism can be used to amplify and center the voices of those impacted by state sponsored violence and racial inequity in the United States. Artivism can build solidarity across lines of difference and connect to our shared humanity. In this talk, Felicia will demonstrate how Behind the Walls, Between the Lines, a movement to deepen the awareness of the legacy of racial inequity in the United States, and inspire activism at its dismantlement, sparks social change. Felicia A. Henry is a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. Her research interests include race, ethnicity, gender, criminal justice/mass incarceration, and social vulnerability in disasters. There have been many changes in our society; women’s right to vote, the abolition of slavery the legislation of same-sex marriage are a few examples in much of the world. But these changes take lifetimes to happen. Zohra Moosa explains how all of us can become an activist; that people working together really can change the world. Zohra Moosa is a feminist activist and currently the Executive Director of Mama Cash, the first international women's fund in the world. Based in Amsterdam and operating globally, the smallish but bold fund supports social justice and human rights groups, organizations, networks and movements led by women, girls, and trans and intersex people by providing financial grants and other non-financial resources. The fund was started 35 years ago as a solidarity fund by a group of women in Amsterdam, and continues today to collect resources from where it can to channel back to courageous feminist activists all around the world. Is our current idea of activism inspiring people to do nothing? Lea Ann Mallett's trajectory as a lifelong activist, from direct action civil disobedience protestor to charity executive director, led her to wonder just that. Lea Ann shares her new definition of activism which will shift the way you see your world, and open your eyes to the power you have to change it. Lea Ann Mallett is a lifelong activist, writer, photographer and a passionate storyteller. The trajectory of Lea Ann’s story has arced through her work as a direct-action wilderness activist for almost two decades as a non-profit executive director. She has engaged media around the world, from the CBC to the BBC, on issues from ancient forest preservation to the protection of monarch butterflies.

Along with her activism, she creates essays on the beauty of life in the wilds of suburbia in her blog Becoming Undomesticated.

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Psychology (with a focus on neurophysiology) from Western University, a Bachelor of Education in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Windsor and extensive leadership training. In this insightful talk, Nat explains why we shouldn't call out hypocrites, and what to do instead. Too often, Nat says, we use the hypocrisy of others as an excuse for inaction, and charity as an excuse to do anything. We target charitable messengers and avoid critiquing charitable messages. Nat argues that the exact opposite should be true. He explains that the people we call hypocrites often aren't actually hypocritical. Their hypocrisy is an illusion. As such, focussing on the hypocrisy of the messenger is inaccurate and misguided. Instead, Nat argues that we should focus on the validity of the message because this helps to maximize impact. We should not target charitable messengers, and critiquing charitable messages should no longer be taboo. Nat challenges us all to "rebut the message not the messenger" because what matters more than doing an action is the impact of that action. According to Nat, small minds rebut people but great minds rebut arguments!

Nat Ware is an entrepreneur, economist, and international development specialist. He is the Founder and CEO of 180 Degrees Consulting, the world's largest consultancy for non-profits and social enterprises, with branches in 28 countries and over 4000 consultants worldwide. Each year 180 Degrees works with hundreds of socially-conscious organizations to help them to operate more effectively and have a greater social impact (www.180dc.org). Nat is a Rhodes Scholar, Goldman Sachs Global Leader, St Gallen Leader of Tomorrow, and World Economic Forum Global Shaper. He was the Top MBA Student at Oxford, received the Convocation Medal for Best All-Rounder at Sydney University, was the Top Economics and Business Student at Sydney University (1/4000 students), and has lectured the postgraduate course 'Innovation, Strategy and Global Business'.

Nat is committed to using entrepreneurial approaches and economic thinking to solve social and environmental challenges. He is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences and events. His other TEDx talks are "Why We're Unhappy: The Expectation Gap" (

A presentation by Mike Haber

Description:
The presentation describes different ways that NGOs and non-profits have used sociocracy in their corporate governance structures. Based largely on Prof. Haber’s experience in representing U.S. activist organizations, he discusses different non-profit governance structures that embrace sociocracy within the context of the legal limitations on non-profits and NGOs.

The more Kristen van Ginhoven works at the intersection of arts and activism, the more she recognizes how being part of the white, cisgender, able-bodied, middle class, heterosexual community is a privilege in which she can no longer afford to be comfortable. If we truly want to be change-makers and contribute to a community of empathy, equity and belonging, we must learn how to tolerate our discomfort. Listen as Kristen shares her uncomfortable and unexpected journey towards a personal and professional awakening.

Sad photos and depressing statistics can only get a charitable campaign so far, especially in a world with “skip” buttons and commercial-free streaming. Ian Smith invites his audience to explore creative, artistic, and hilarious campaign strategies, all while discussing how valuable it can be to rely on inspiration rather than guilt when targeting a broad audience. Ian Smith has been hosting community events and leadership dialogues across Texas since 2010, when he co-founded and expanded his dorm-room idea into a registered 501c3 non-profit. The Human-Environmental-Animal-Team (H.E.A.T.) started as a small club aiming to make volunteering fun. Within one year, the club won a cash grant and the title of “Organization of the year” from Texas State University. Since its creation in 2010, Ian has founded eight chapters at universities and high schools across Texas. Ian also founded and currently manages a successful abroad program focusing on reforestation and restoration of coral reefs throughout Asia and Central America. Outstanding members from H.E.A.T. chapters have taken positive activism to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Thailand and Indonesia, changing the lives of attending students. The various H.E.A.T. chapters across Texas partake in physical volunteer work and have had many successes in launching creative awareness and fundraising campaigns. NOTE FROM TED: This talk represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of political activism; some viewers may be offended by it. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/ma....nuals/tedx_content_g

We are currently living in one of the most tumultuous periods of political change - from the rise of populism to the potential break up of long established international partnerships. Femi Oluwole is passionate about youth engagement and this has seen him challenge establishment figures on TV and radio. Femi tells us about his own journey in political activism and how to inspire others to pursue the causes about which they feel passionate.
Femi is a political activist and founder Our Future Our Choice the anti-Brexit student activism platform. After graduating in Law from Nottingham University he worked for Human Rights organisations before taking up the political mantle. His passionate advocacy for youth engagement has seen him challenge establishment figures on TV and radio and generated invitations to write for the Independent, Guardian and Metro newspapers. Femi will challenge Politicians to promote facts rather than opinions and inspire his peers to join the debate. Should we ally with the Left or the Right? On one hand, the Liberal party has appealed to Muslim rights as a minority group, while the Conservative party aligns with our moral values. Muslim political involvement is a fairly recent trend, and our alliances speak to more than just our personal preferences.

How can we secure our rights in a secular democracy while also pushing back against policies that go against our beliefs, such as the open promotion of LGBTQ ideas in our schools? Imam Tom Facchine invites Dr. Mobeen Vaid to recount the history of Muslim political involvement and activism, as well as to discuss ways to maneuver the political landscape while staying true to our faith.
