Their first glimpse of success came in high school with The El Guapos, a popular indie-rock outfit that disbanded after three years of packed Austin venues, a capacity performance at the 2009 NAMM SXSW-Underage showcase, and a botched European record deal. While Miller and Harris studied at The University of Texas, Dennis honed his recording and production skills, founding Indie Fort Studios and working with artists like Mother Falcon, Little Lo, KJ Hines and more. In December of 2009, the three friends rented a beach house in Surfside, TX for a weekend. It was there, over several bottles of wine on a moonlit beach (because where else would a band like Sphynx start?) that they decided to begin making music together again. Determined to create something that could last, the three began writing as soon as they returned to Austin; this time experimenting with pop and electronic music. They called it Sphynx.

The band began to receive attention when their debut single, "Razberry Wine" was featured on several local compilation albums and received play on local radio station, KVRX. With the help of two prominent artist collectives; The Vagabond Collective and The Skank Family, Sphynx was able to build a following through a string of Austin performances, including a headlining spot at Austin's Of Montreal after show. Their second single, "Maneater Pt. II," found success in the blogosphere and was featured on notable sites like My Old Kentucky Blog and The Hype Machine. Sphynx gained more momentum with the February 2011 release of their debut EP, 'Human Beast.' Critics applauded the EP's "elaborate synth pop," and proclaimed that "here we've got a new breed" who "recycles a bit of history and puts a bit of soul to their songs."

During the summer of 2011, 'Human Beast' charted in the top 30 on radio stations in Canada, Alaska, New York, Michigan, Florida, California, Louisiana and Texas. The EP's appeal quickly expanded beyond radio and in August of 2011, 'Human Beast' was licensed by MTV, VH1, Showtime, E!, Oxygen, and Fox Sports Network for use on over 18 programs. Meanwhile, Sphynx hasn't stopped to catch their breath, racking up performances across the United States that include a 2011 showcase at The 35 Conferette Music Festival (along with Dr. Dog, Big Boi, Local Natives, Gayngs), several large SXSW day parties, and opening slots for popular acts like Wavves, Maps and Atlases, Holy Fuck, The Octopus Project, White Denim, and Peelander-Z. This October, Sphynx will be releasing a cassette tape consisting of a new single and several remixes of songs from 'Human Beast.' The release party is set to take place at Frank in Austin, TX at 10pm on October 7th. Motel Aviv and Corduroi will also be performing.

www.sphynxmusic.com

TUNE IN AGAIN SOON FOR MORE FROM BALCONYTV AUSTIN!!!
