A Dutchman appears before a judge in Lima, Peru. The man is a prime suspect for the murder of a female Peruvian student.

Joran Van der Sloot, the young Dutch man who confessed to killing a female student in Peru, was interrogated by a judge in Lima on Monday as investigations into the case continue.

Van der Sloot has admitted to murdering 21-year-old business student Stephany Flores. Her body was found in a Lima hotel room earlier this month.

But some reports have said he later retracted the confession.

Van der Sloot is also linked to the mysterious disappearance of a young American woman in the southern Caribbean island of Aruba.

The United States press is closely following the trial and news trucks gather outside Castro prison, venue for the proceedings.

Peruvian demonstrators gathered outside with banners in support of the Flores family and photos of the murder victim.

[Homobono Vilchez, Protester]: (Spanish, probably male)
"I am here in moral support of the family of Stephany Flores with my streamer and my sign and my presence. Because she was brutally murdered by the Dutch man. And I think I feel the same as the 29 million other Peruvians. We are not going to allow them to trick us into to letting him go to the Netherlands so he doesn't serve time here in Peru."

Van der Sloot's Peruvian lawyer Maximo Altez left the prison without making any comments.

Peruvian police say Van der Sloot killed Flores after finding her looking at his laptop computer in his hotel room.

The laptop allegedly contained e-mails about the 2005 death of Natalee Holloway.

The 18-year-old American from Alabama vanished during a high school graduation trip to the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005.
