But then Van der Straten came back and and he told me they took my husband into custody because of, I don't know how to explain that in English (Reporter asks: As a material witness?)...as a witness or as a suspect. STORYLINE

Aruban police on Thursday arrested the father of a Dutch teenager already in custody in connection with the disappearance of a young American woman and said he was considered a suspect in the three-week-old case.

Paul van der Sloot, a 52-year-old judge in training, became the fifth person detained, joining his 17-year-old son, Joran van der Sloot, and three other young men.

No one has been charged.

The elder van der Sloot was "a suspect in the disappearance" of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, according to a spokeswoman for the Attorney General's office on the Caribbean island, which is a Dutch protectorate.

In an interview with APTN, Van der Sloot's wife condemned the arrest, saying: "It's really unbelievable what is going on and it's really not about Natalee anymore."

Anita van der Sloot said her husband was arrested shortly after they left the San Nicolas prison where Joran was being held.

She said they received a call from neighbours saying police were waiting for them at their home in Noord, northwest of the capital, Oranjestad.
