"It's not true. Joran changed his story one time. I think he was scared because he sneaked out of the house that evening. I think he was scared and he just wanted to maybe cover other people too. He changed his story once and he added some details, but he never changed his story several times."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Anita van der Sloot, mother of detained young man:
"They took my husband and I thought well maybe this is just for some questions. But then Van der Straaten came back and and he told me they took my husband into custody because of, I don't know how to explain that in English (Reporter asks: As a material witness?).... as a witness or as a suspect. He said as a suspect. And he wanted to tell me himself and I said: 'Well, I thank you very much, but no, this is something that is so bizarre, so bizarre, that my husband who is a man full of integrity, who worked for 15 years in the justitional (justice) department, that he got taken like this. Without any evidence, without anything. That... I was just furious. I am very emotional right now. The nightmare is even getting worse."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Anita van der Sloot, mother of detained young man:
"This is not about Natalee anymore. This is about an enormous pressure from the States (USA). Media pressure. This is political, economical, it's just they don't know what to do and they need their victims. So it's really unbelievable what is going on and it's really not about Natalee anymore."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Anita van der Sloot, mother of detained young man:
"And this is not the Aruba that I know, that I love and that I have in my heart, because here is something very, very wrong. I'm sorry...."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Anita van der Sloot, mother of detained young man:
"He was sad about what happened. He blamed himself. He continues to repeat it and today again: 'Mum my thoughts are with the family, my thoughts are with Natalee, I know she is alive, she is somewhere, she is alive and I should have brought her to a responsible adult. That I blame myself and I will blame my whole life. But the truth will come out and I will be out of here soon.' That's what he keeps repeating and repeating. And when I look at this boy, I can only say that he is telling the truth. And now that my husband gets involved, I don't know where the pressure comes from. I don't know what's going on, but this is the most ridiculous case."

STORYLINE

Aruban police on Thursday arrested the father of a Dutch teenager already in custody in connection with the disappearance of a young American woman and said he was considered a suspect in the three-week-old case.

Paul van der Sloot, a 52-year-old judge in training, became the fifth person detained, joining his 17-year-old son, Joran van der Sloot, and three other young men.

No one has been charged.

The elder van der Sloot was "a suspect in the disappearance" of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, according to a spokeswoman for the Attorney General's office on the Caribbean island, which is a Dutch protectorate.
