Animal Welfare Under Resourced in Israel

This includes pets and animals grown for the food industry. Our reporter brings more details.<br /><br />Animal rights are under pressure and The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Tel Aviv can't keep up with animals that have been deserted by their owners. <br /><br />At the same time some commercial ventures are involved with animal cruelty, adding more pressure on the society's resources.<br /><br />[Naama Ronlick, Animal Adoption Consultant ]:<br />"Dasha's a purebred Siamese that's been here four months. She used to belong to a family that didn't want her any more and left her with us."<br /><br />All manner of animals find their way to this shelter.<br /><br />[Naama Ronlick, Animal Adoption Consultant]:<br />"When they are brought here they go through a process of rehabilitation. Birds that can be released into the open, like pigeons, we release, and the same goes for other animals that can be released back to the wild. We do not give them away to private people."<br /><br />Around 1,000 cats and dogs enter the society's shelters every month.<br /><br />[Eyal Gateniu, Animal Extractor ]: <br />"Every dog or cat that leaves this place is first neutered and fully vaccinated. Moreover, we offer castration and vaccinations at subsidized prices to encourage pet owners who might not be able to afford normal fees."<br /><br />Due to a shortage of vets, care for stray animals is lacking.<br /><br />Current laws seem inept in the face of industrial corporations manufacturing animal-related products.<br /><br />[Dr. Dganit Ben Dov]:<br />"We want cheap quality food, and it often comes at the expense of the animals in one way or another."<br /><br />Here in Kibbutz Shoval, they go an extra mile to care for their animals.
