I remember it as though it had just happened - that fateful early morning in the spring of eighty-six when our grandma woke up my brother and me to share the news that American fighter jets of both Airforce and Navy, in retaliation for the terrorist bombing of a West Berlin disco heavily frequented by US military personnel, had started to attack various targets in Libya. While most of the aircraft involved had taken off from aircraft carriers that cruised the Western Mediterranean as part of the 6th US fleet, some of the most devastating attacks were flown by General Dynamics F-111 long range interdictor fighters that were stationed on various airbases in Southern England.
