So what changes took place on 01 July 2023 regarding Australian work permit visa, student visa and tourist of visitor visa?
Changes to Australia student visas
In an effort to address workforce shortages, student visa work restrictions were relaxed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and removed last January. This allowed primary and secondary student visa holders to work over the usual limit of 40 hours per fortnight.
But from 1 July, student visa work restrictions will be re-introduced and capped at an increased rate of 48 hours per fortnight. However, international students working in the aged care sector will be exempt from the limit until 31 December 2023. Still it is more than the pre-covid era, where the time was 40 hours / fortnight.
Australia is one of the few country, where it’s legal for international students to work anywhere. In most countries it’s illegal or they have to work within their education institute’s campus only, where there is no adequate job.
Also from this date, some holders of subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visas will be able to stay in Australia for a longer period.
The extension means a stay period of four years for Bachelor's degree graduates (up from two years), five years for Master's degree graduates (up from three) and six years for doctoral graduates (up from four).
Increase in visa application cost;
The visa application fee for some of the visa increased, these are:
Subclass 500 student visa fee is now 715 Australian Dollar, which was AU$650 before the visa update took place on 1st of July 2023.
Subclass 600 Tourist visa or visitor visa fee is Australian dollar since 01 July 2023, which was AU$150 before this changes in took place on Australian visa process on 01 July 2023.
Migrants will earn more
Also from 1 July 2023, the minimum salary an applicant needs to receive sponsorship from an employer will increase.
The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) has not been raised since it was frozen at AU$53,000 a decade ago. It will jump to AU$70,000, where it would have been without the freeze. For example, the Temporary Short term Skill shortage visa or TSS workers will now have to get a job offer with AU$70,000 per year.
Skilled workers will have a pathway to permanent residency
The government also said it would provide all skilled temporary workers with the opportunity to apply for permanent residency by the year’s end. Also the conditions to apply for PR from TR has been eased in terms of earning requirement, there is no specific income requirements. Earlier there was a condition of earning AU$53000 per year to be eligible for applying for permanent residency of Australia.
Skilled migrants prioritised
The government will return the planning level for permanent migration in 2023-24 to 190,000 places. All these visas will enable to bring their family so including that total 40000 (4 lakh) visas will be granted in order to address persistent skill shortages.
