The wildfires in Maui completely destroyed the historic town of Lahaina, and families there have nothing to return to but piles of burnt metal and ash. Amid the tragedy, people are still finding ways to come together to help each other. CBS News' Tony Dokoupil is there with more.

British rock star Mick Fleetwood, who has lived in Hawaii for decades, has said the situation in Lahaina is "catastrophic" following deadly wildfires that have killed at least 93 people.

The Fleetwood Mac drummer told Sky News the disaster has been "an incredible shock for everyone" and described the scene as "complete devastation".

Fleetwood revealed he was in LA visiting family when the fires broke out but flew back immediately, bringing supplies with him.

Lahaina is a sleepy historical town once again. While Maui is open, Lahaina restaurants, hotels, and shops are still working on opening up. The crowds are not back yet which makes the town feel peaceful.

But don’t get me wrong, Lahaina, Maui is ready to welcome back tourists (who wear their masks and social distance). The most popular restaurants and shops are open and welcoming back the few visitors who have made it over to Hawaii.

Lahaina Front Street, one of the most visited spots in Maui, has always held a special place in the hearts of our family. From our childhood visits in 1990 to our recent trip in June, Front Street has been a constant source of joy and memories.

During our last visit, we felt compelled to record a video capturing the essence of this vibrant street. Little did we know that this would become a poignant reminder of what once was.

Today, on August 9, 2023, devastating news of the billions of dollars in damage to Lahaina and its surrounding communities, particularly Front Street, has left us heartbroken.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone on the island as they face this unimaginable loss. Through sharing this video, we hope to bring a glimmer of happiness and pay tribute to the beauty and spirit of Lahaina Front Street.

Deadly wildfires have killed at least 80 people on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

The fires nearly wiped out the historic town of 13,000 people and were still not fully contained Friday night on some parts of the island.

A new wildfire Friday evening triggered the evacuation of Kaanapali, a coastal community a few miles north of Lahaina, but crews were able to extinguish it, authorities said.

Maui County raised the number of confirmed deaths to 80 Friday night, and Gov. Josh Green warned that the toll would likely rise as search and rescue operations continue. Authorities set a curfew from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday. Cadaver-sniffing dogs were deployed to search for the dead, Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. said.

The recent fires on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island have affected all of us very deeply. Our hearts ache for those who have lost loved ones, homes, and precious memories that will never be recovered. We are a tight-knit and resilient community that comes together during times of pain and hardship. We are deeply moved by the efforts to provide relief to those who are affected.

Bishop Museum will be donating proceeds of Friday night’s Moonlight Mele concert to the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement Kākoʻo Maui as well as the American Red Cross of Hawaiʻi.

Through Friday, Aug. 18, we'll be accepting supply donations on behalf of Kākoʻo Maui at Shop Pacifica (the retail store at the entrance of the Museum). Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

For those attending Friday's Moonlight Mele concert, donations will be accepted until 9 p.m. A link to a list of most-needed supplies can be found at the end of this message.

Additionally, Bishop Museum pledges to help continue preserving and perpetuating the historical and cultural significance of Lahaina, and its importance in Hawaiʻi’s history. Shared here is a video by Bishop Museum Historian and Curator for the Archives DeSoto Brown, recorded on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023, when much of the news of the devastation in Lahaina was developing.

DeSoto shares his personal thoughts on the tragedy as well as his thoughts as a historian, noting the suddenness and significance of this event and how it impacts our Islands’ collective history. Over the coming weeks, DeSoto and the Museum will share its historical resources to help keep the memory of Lahaina alive, and contribute whatever we can in its rebuilding and recovery.

Came to Maui to heal, celebrate, honor and memorialize a truly great and amazing man, Kevin Sousa. The first couple of days were great and going as planned. And then the hurricane that was south of the Hawaiian Islands produced some extremely strong winds, and you know the rest of the story (although the news outlets were pretty inaccurate in a LOT of coverage). Walking the streets of Lahaina was surreal and horrific and it was as the Gov. Green said… “tragically gone.” Grateful the fire stopped before we were directly impacted, but devastated for the Ohanas and the people of Lahaina and Maui. So much loss and so much healing to be done.

You’re in luck if you came to Lahaina for the beaches. Kanapali Beach is gorgeous and full of activities to keep you occupied, and Napali Beach has gentler waters for snorkelers.

There are also several parks in Lahaina for you to enjoy. Banyan Tree State Park is one of the best with its giant Banyan tree that takes up acres of land and looks like an entire forest on its own. You can also picnic amongst the green grass of Launiupokoo State Park or see the turtles at Wahilukui Wayside Park.

Visiting Lahaina will help you explore the culture of Hawaii. Celebrate the influence of Japanese plantation workers at the Jodo Mission. Experience more of the history of Hawaii at the Baldwin Home Museum.

You can also watch the Old Lauhaina Luau or the Myths of Maui Luau show. These combination show/feasts are one of the most enduring Hawaiian traditions and are worth seeing for yourself.

The Hawaiian islands are known for their food, and visiting a delicious restaurant like the Mahi Grill is one of the best things to do in Lahaina. You can also go to the Maui Dragon Fruit Farm for a delicious treat and find fun ways to traverse the fields. Check out Punakea Palms for tours and activities amongst a range of local produce.

If you want to get underwater, try taking a trip on the Atlantis submarine. You can also entrust at least part of your trip to a tour agency like Makai Adventures or the Whale Center of the Pacific.

Best Things to Do in Lahaina, Hawaii

A man who was able to escape the wildfire that swept through Lahaina — destroying the town and leaving scores of people dead — described the horrifying moments the fire overtook the town.

Craig Bradley said wind “funneled” the fire right into Lahaina as people were still sleeping.

“I’m just horrified. It’s just so much heavy smoke being pushed at such a high velocity,” Bradley explained.

“It’s just being funneled straight into Lahaina from right across the highway from Lahaina, like maybe a couple hundred yards or something. And there’s a couple houses in that spot and they’re going up: ‘Boom, Boom!’" he added.

Another survivor said she was surprised by the quickness with which the fire came upon the town.

Hawaii governor Josh Green said “very little” was left of Lahaina, with more than 2,700 structures destroyed in what is now the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. Ninety-six people have been confirmed dead so far.

After spending decades with a Hawaiian trip on our bucket list, we finally made it to the islands just a few months ago and spent one day in Maui’s historic town of Lahaina, which is as old as the United States and once served as the capital of the Hawaiian kingdom. Our visit marked the 150 year anniversary of the planting of the largest banyan tree in the US, so we filmed part of our episode around its trunks. That tree, which was a gift from missionaries in India, was just destroyed by the wildfires, along with more than 300 buildings including the Front Street boutique and home of our friend who hosted us during our visit and provided our outfits in that episode. Our hearts go out to all those who have lost friends, family, and homes as they continue the evacuation effort.
