Grizzly bears in the Yellowstone region will be stripped of their Endangered Species status because numbers have sufficiently recovered to allow hunting outside national park borders. In 1975 only 136 animals were left in the area located in parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Now around 700 bears roam the Yellowstone region.

The quetzal once thrived from Panama to Oaxaca State in humid rainforests.

But habitat destruction and hunting of the birds for their feathers affected their population.

The bird park is the first sanctuary to successfully reproduce quetzals in captivity, but they still haven't had success with the harpy eagle.

[Salvador Figueroa, Biologist]:
"It took us more than 20 years to develop the skill to develop it [the quetzal]. The pavon, the eternal guardian, today we have three chicks. But the program that still has not produced eggs or chicks is the reproduction of the harpy eagle, but these have been our chief programs. We are talking about more than 20 years of research. It's the only center in the world which has managed to reproduce the quetzal."

In December 2010, Mexican authorities classified the harpy eagle as specially protected, encouraging researchers at El Nido to try and accelerate the raptor's reintroduction into its natural habitat.

Apart from species from Mexico and Central America, El Nido also works with birds from diverse habitats from other parts of the world.

In England, a desert antelope has been transferred to the Bedfordshire zoo in an ongoing effort to bring the species back from the brink of extinction. Having traveled from the Aalborg Zoo in Denmark through land and sea, Sabre, a scimitar horned oryx seems to very much like his new enclosure, with plenty of space to run and other antelopes to hang with. On the outskirts of the country town of Dubbo in New South Wales Australia, is the Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The 1,000 acres of Australian bush land provides a safe environment for many threatened animal species.

And it’s a setting that offers more than just a stable existence for its inhabitants. The zoo’s Life Science Manager, Paul Metcalfe, explains.

[Paul Metcalfe, Life Science Manager]:
“The zoo has been involved in a large number of endangered species breeding program for some time now, particularly we focus on rhinos.”

The rhino horn on the black market is valued at thousands of US dollars per ounce. With the increasing danger of extinction, a good breeding program is all the more important for their survival.

[Paul Metcalfe, Life Science Manager]:
“In the past year since the program began, we have bred 10 black rhinos and 11 white rhinos.”

These Mongolian horses are also facing extinction..

[Paul Metcalfe, Life Science Manager]:
“We successfully raised a number of animals which we relocated back to Mongolia to be released back into the wild as they are extinct in that area.”

The zoo also manages Australian species.

[Paul Metcalfe, Life Science Manager]:
“The zoo is not just about exotic species, it is certainly very much involved in the Australian species management… We have been breeding mallee fowl over the years to put back into the wild.”

This Aussie Echidna looks like he’s gathering groceries for dinner. And not to be outdone for international fame are the ever popular giraffes.

[Paul Metcalfe, Life Science Manager]:
“We have a very successful breeding program for giraffes probably one of the best in the country, if not the world.”

This open range zoo is certainly playing a vital role nationally and internationally, as a sanctuary for species management.

Philippa Rayment, NTD Dubbo, Australia

As the largest, most populated and fastest growing continent on Earth, Asia may be the region of the world where the most animal species face extinction due to conflicts with humans. The rapid development of land for use by humans all over Asia poses a serious threat to many animal species, and many Asian governments do too little too late to protect their own environments.

The Indian sub-continent. Once home to the Indus valley civilization, India has always been a country of many great and diverse cultures. These cultures largely spent their time building things, going to war and building more things. Oh, and having loads of freaky, freaky sex. While things weren't always peaceful, the Indian sub-continent, left to its own devices, flourished.

Until the white plague. For a period of some 200 years, the Indian sub-continent was ravaged by a plague of Hermasjesteria blandus, more commonly known as the colonial housefly. Fortunately, in 1947, this was overcome and India's inhabitants were once more at peace. Or they should have been anyway.

But 70 years on, a great number of species who call India their home are in danger of going extinct. Some due to natural causes, and others due to predation and habitat loss. Here are 5 Indian species in danger of going extinct.
....
For more videos like this visit http://www.catchnews.com/video/

Bushmeat is the term commonly used for meat of terrestrial wild animals, killed for subsistence or commercial purposes throughout. Bushmeat hunting is common in many parts of the world where hunting of animals from the wild is performed. The issue of bushmeat hunting is highly politicized, with little support for the practice outside the forests and cities where it is conducted.

Despite the ban on hunting since 1991, rampant corruption and poor law enforcement have made it possible for poachers and forest dwellers to feast on some of India's endangered species. Bushmeat consumption is, not surprisingly, higher in remote villages with little access to markets, where it's less than half the price of domesticated animal meat. Largely due to unchecked hunting, 172 species from India have already made it to the Red List of animals on the brink of extinction, annually updated by the World Conservation Union. Hunting is a serious threat to wildlife worldwide.

Nagaland is a state in the far north-eastern part of India. It borders the state of Assam to the west, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam to the north, Burma to the east and Manipur to the south. The state capital is Kohima, and the largest city is Dimapur. The state of Nagaland has an area of 16,579 km2 with a population of 1,980,602 (nineteen lakhs eighty thousand six hundred two) as per the 2011 census making it one of the smallest states of India. The state is mostly mountainous except those areas bordering Assam valley. Mount Saramati is the highest peak in Nagaland with a height of 3,840 metres and its range forms a natural barrier between Nagaland and Burma. It lies between the parallels of 98 degree and 96 degree East Longitude and 26.6 degree and 27.4 degree latitude North of the Equator.

Source - Wikipedia

This footage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of imagery from South Asia.
