He made his directorial debut in 1995 with Maborosi and has since directed critically acclaimed films such as Nobody Knows, Still Walking, and Shoplifters. #Koreeda's films often explore themes of family, loss, memory, and the human condition, with a focus on character-driven stories and intimate portrayals of human relationships.

Kore-eda's humanistic approach to filmmaking has won him numerous awards and accolades, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 for Shoplifters. He is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary filmmakers, not only in Japan but around the world.

In Still Walking a group of grown children visit their elderly parents, one summer day. The aging parents have lived in the family home for decades. Their son and daughter return for a rare family reunion, bringing their own families with them. They have gathered to commemorate the tragic death of the eldest son, who drowned in an accident fifteen years ago. Although the roomy house is as comforting and unchanging as the mother's homemade feast, everyone in the family has subtly changed. This is a typical dysfunctional family, bonded by love as well as resentments and secrets.
