It’s a rainy night, water pours endlessly down the sky, and a woman, So-young (Lee Ji-eun), climbs the stairs leading to a small church surmounted by an imposing red neon cross. It’s the Busan Family Church, home to one of the many “baby boxes” disseminated across the nation. She is going to leave her little Woo-sung there, abandoning him in complete anonymity, with the faint promise of coming back for him someday. But she is not alone. Shrouded in rainy darkness, detective Ji-Sun (Bae Doona) and her colleague (Lee Joo-young) are monitoring the baby box hoping to find some leads to crack down on illegal child trafficking. At the receiving end of the box, two men, Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) and Dong-soo (Gang Dong-won), an employee in the facility, follow what appears to be their normal routine. They check that no one is around, delete the surveillance video and steal Woo-sung. They are brokers, ready to put the baby up for sale to their network of wealthy wannabe parents. But something totally unexpected sends their plans off on a different path. And, on the following day, the mother does return to take back her child. Making an effortless transition from Japan to Korea, Kore-eda revisits themes dear to him — forsaken childhood, adoption, and broken families are at the narrative core of undisputed masterpieces such as Nobody Knows (TIFF ‘04), Like Father Like Son (TIFF ’13), and Shoplifters (TIFF ’18). Without forcefulness or rhetoric, Kore-eda looks directly at life and creates a small, unconventional family universe. Broker is a film filled with moments of wonder and powerful emotion. Hirokazu Kore-eda revient avec un nouveau film qu’il a tourné en Corée, en coréen et avec des stars locales : Song Kang-ho, de “Parasite” et IU, une star de la K-pop. Nos critiques sont-ils emballés ?

Les Bonnes Étoiles raconte l’histoire d’une jeune femme qui abandonne son nouveau-né et qui se rend compte qu’il a été récupéré par deux trafiquants de bébé. S’ensuit un road-trip à la recherche de nouveaux parents adoptifs avec les trafiquants, la mère et un invité surprise. Kore-eda reste dans un registre qu’il maîtrise avec une fable sur la famille qu’on se créée.

Ce nouveau Kore-eda brille par sa mise en scène mais se perd dans un scénario très riche, empli de bons sentiments qui le sont un peu trop. Mais un film mineur de Kore-eda vaut des films majeurs de beaucoup d’autres cinéastes.

Connu pour sa fibre sociale et son fascinant style cinématographique, il figure parmi les plus grands cinéastes de notre époque. Lauréat de la Palme d’or en 2018 pour « Une affaire de famille », en 2023 Hirokazu Kore-eda est de nouveau en compétition au Festival de Cannes avec « Monster ». Il est né en 1962 à Tokyo d’une mère cinéphile et d’un père hanté par ses expériences dans l’armée japonaise pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et son emprisonnement dans un camp de travail en Sibérie. Révélé au niveau international en 2004 avec « Nobody Knows », Kore-eda a signé des chefs-d’œuvre comme « Tel père, tel fils », sorti en 2013.

By 1995 Kore-eda was already well established as a documentary director, but it was his fiction debut that brought him international attention, winning prizes in Chicago, Vancouver and Venice, and securing commercial releases in western countries.

An apparently happy marriage is abruptly ended by the husband’s sudden death, but was it accident or suicide? Kore-eda’s haunting, meditative film traces a widow’s attempts to cope with and comprehend her bereavement.

With its static camera set-ups and long takes evoking the work of the great Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu and Taiwanese master Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Maborosi announced a vital new presence in Japanese cinema.

Hirokazu Kore-eda is a Japanese filmmaker whose contemplative, visually distinct and humanist films stand as some of the best films of the last twenty years, including Maborosi, After Life and Still Walking. They combine realism with an often formalist style to explore a variety of emotions, including those felt between parents and their young children in his latest film, Like Father, Like Son.

Kore-eda presented the film at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival following its Jury Prize win at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. It was our great privilege to have him join us early in the morning for a brief discussion of the film, its production and themes at our studio in OCAD U's Graduate Gallery.

After the global success of the Cannes Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters, master auteur Kore-eda Hirokazu’s wry and charming new dramedy THE TRUTH pairs beloved Academy Award nominees Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche for the first time, as a celebrated actress and her estranged daughter whose tentative reunion offers an opportunity to either repair or irrevocably fracture their relationship.

Fabienne (Deneuve) is a star; a much loved, larger-than-life icon of French cinema. When she publishes her memoirs, her screenwriter daughter Lumir (Binoche) returns to Paris from New York for the occasion, with her struggling actor husband Hank (Ethan Hawke) and their inquisitive young daughter Charlotte (Clémentine Grenier) in tow. It comes as no surprise to Lumir that everything in her grand childhood home still revolves around her mother, and as she begins to read Fabienne’s book it becomes clear it’s riddled with omissions and embellishments – especially with regard to her relationship with the great artistic rival of her past, Sarah Mondavan.

Fabienne herself has no time for explanations and small talk; she’s preparing for her next film, a science-fiction drama, cast alongside a rising new talent (Manon Clavel) touted as ‘the next Sarah Mondavan’. When Fabienne’s long-suffering assistant unexpectedly quits, she and Lumir are reluctantly forced into an awkward working relationship, with Lumir revisiting the same film studios where she spent countless hours as a child. As the on and off-set worlds begin to amusingly – and movingly – intertwine, suppressed emotions can no longer be kept in check…

With a keen knowledge and love of French cinema, Kore-eda lends this hugely enjoyable film the observant, tender eye audiences have come to cherish. This is Deneuve’s most delectable role in years, and she is magnificent; delivering frequent bon mots with insouciance and aplomb. Binoche too is outstanding as the daughter who has had to grow up in the shadow of stardom, and tries to control her world by writing it into being.

Warmly compared to Olivier Assayas’ exquisite Summer Hours by multiple critics upon its Venice premiere, THE TRUTH is a very special cinema experience: a gentle and moving exploration of reality and fiction, family, performance, and the great spectacle of life.
