#HirokazuKoreeda is a Japanese film director, producer, and screenwriter, born on June 6, 1962, in Tokyo. He made his directorial debut in 1995 with Maborosi and has since directed critically acclaimed films such as Nobody Knows, Still Walking, and Shoplifters. #Koreeda's films often explore themes of family, loss, memory, and the human condition, with a focus on character-driven stories and intimate portrayals of human relationships.

Kore-eda's humanistic approach to filmmaking has won him numerous awards and accolades, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 for Shoplifters. He is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary filmmakers, not only in Japan but around the world.

Through his films, Kore-eda has established himself as a master storyteller, renowned for his ability to capture the complexities of human emotions and relationships on screen. Hailed as the celebrated director’s “most profound” (The Film Stage) and “beautifully balanced” (The Hollywood Reporter) work, AFTER THE STORM is, in Kore-eda’s own words, “the film that is most colored by what I am.”

In Still Walking a group of grown children visit their elderly parents, one summer day. The aging parents have lived in the family home for decades. Their son and daughter return for a rare family reunion, bringing their own families with them. They have gathered to commemorate the tragic death of the eldest son, who drowned in an accident fifteen years ago. Although the roomy house is as comforting and unchanging as the mother's homemade feast, everyone in the family has subtly changed. This is a typical dysfunctional family, bonded by love as well as resentments and secrets.

This video introduces and defines common architecture terms from A to Z. It is no secret that architecture is full of jargon and unique vocabulary. This can be the subject of jokes and memes but it can also lead to confusion and frustration. The reliance on jargon is somewhat forgivable — the task of translating complex spatial, geometric, and compositional principles into verbal language is difficult. However, it means that one must invest in learning the language to fully grasp written and verbal communication about buildings. This video helps by providing definitions for 26 common architectural terms in alphabetical order. Terms include: aesthetic, buttress, circulation, diagrammatic, enfilade, fenestration, geodesic, hierarchy, iconic, jamb, kitsch, legibility, morphology, node, ornament, program, quoin, rustication, stereotomy, tectonics, urbanism, yurt, and zeitgeist. Whether you're in architecture school, or an architecture enthusiast, armed with this fundamental vocabulary, you’ll be able to keep up with any architectural conversation.

His work has earned awards such as the Architecture Record Design Vanguard Award or the Young Architect’s Forum Award and has been featured in exhibitions such as the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Design Miami, as well as at the V&A Museum and Tate Modern in London. His writings can be found in the co-authored book Misguided Tactics for Propriety Calibration, published with the Graham Foundation, as well as essays in MONU magazine, the AIA Journal Manifest, Log, bracket, and the guest-edited issue of MAS Context on the topic of character architecture.

Located near central Melbourne with a view towards the Yarra River, Kew Residence is home of an architect that unites architecture, art, design and craft. Designed by and for John Wardle of John Wardle Architects, the architecture and interior design is intricately detailed, with emphasis placed on materiality and bespoke elements. The house is positioned to appear as part of the natural landscape of elm trees on the site, in a way that reflects the respect for nature inherent in Japanese design.

The architect’s love of the Japanese artefact is depicted in the forms and specifications within the interior design and architecture. Throughout the house, custom Japanese tiles are used as a measure, with spaces designed in response to the size, shape and aesthetic of the tiling. The kitchen walls feature a scalloped tile from the Tajimi Valley in Japan. A downstairs space known as the Bamboo Forest Room features tiles produced in a singular kiln in the Tajimi Valley. Each piece is slightly different, creating a varied and beautiful result that reflects the uniqueness and simplicity of Japanese artefacts. The master bathroom contains a mix of Agape products and INAX ceramic tiles, with a Nivis basin and Cristalplant bathtub completing its luxurious, organic materiality.

As the home of an architect, sculptural features are given equal weight to functional elements. The house displays John Wardle’s love of narrative, with personal stories contained in the customised interior design, an example being a table that tells the tale of a tea tray the architect purchased as a student.

As is often seen with the home of an architect, every detail of this house has been carefully considered with bespoke elements, play of light and aesthetic effects taking precedence.
