Composer(s): Johann Sebastian Bach
Original Music: Johann Sebastian Bach © (1695-1750)
The Bachfest Leipzig is marking a special anniversary in 2023: In the year 1723, so exactly 300 years ago, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) took up his post as cantor of St. Thomas Church in the Saxon city. This involved composing, arranging, and conducting the music for worship in several churches on around 60 days of the year, as well as teaching pupils at the St. Thomas School. To accomplish this mammoth task, Bach composed new cantatas or parodied earlier works at a rate of almost one a week during his first year in office alone. The compositions, which later became known as Bach’s “first cantata cycle in Leipzig,” not only astonished his contemporaries but continue to delight people to this day. These compositions are extraordinary not only for their diversity but also for the way in which Bach reworked traditional musical forms and expanded the genre into new creative terrain – all in the space of one year between 1723 and 1724. Despite their technical challenges, these cantatas are among the Baroque composer’s most popular and frequently performed works.
Ton Koopman, Bach expert and international star of early music, has chosen four favorites from the last quarter of Bach’s first cantata cycle in Leipzig, which he is performing with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. In addition, there are two interviews in which Michael Maul, artistic director of the Bachfest Leipzig, asks Ton Koopman about the unique features of the four cantatas. Enjoy an informative as well as musically first-class cantata concert!

“China’s premier interpreter of Bach”, is what International Piano Magazine called Yuan Sheng. A pupil of Solomon Mikowsky (Manhattan School of Music) and notably Rosalyn Tureck, Yuan Sheng extensively studied the performance practice of Baroque music. Equally at home at the harpsichord he has an instinctive feeling for the possibilities, sonorities and touch of the instrument at hand, so that “the listener might easily have imagined the composer at the keyboard” (Boston Intelligencer).
The title is misleading: the English Suites are more ‘French’ in character than the French Suites, which are more characteristic of the Italian style. ‘By design the composer is here less learned than in his other suites,’ remarked one early biographer, ‘and has mostly used a pleasing, more predominant melody.’ Just so, and the same is true of the pair of suites BWV 818 and 819 which fall outside the collection but belong with it in terms of style. To all of them Yuan Sheng brings considered tempi and precise articulation in the mould of Tureck. To Bach at his most uncomplicated, Sheng brings the virtues of simplicity and clarity.
Again Yuan Sheng draws the listener into his highly intelligent musical discourse, vibrant and moving, speaking through the medium of a modern Steinway piano.

Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. Bach enriched established German styles through his mastery of counterpoint, harmonic and motivic organisation, and his adaptation of rhythms, forms, and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Bach's compositions include hundreds of cantatas, both sacred and secular. He composed Latin church music, Passions, oratorios and motets. He often adopted Lutheran hymns, not only in his larger vocal works, but for instance also in his four-part chorales and his sacred songs. He wrote extensively for organ and for other keyboard instruments. He composed concertos, for instance for violin and for harpsichord, and suites, as chamber music as well as for orchestra. Many of his works employ the genres of canon and fugue.

In May 2014 the Hungarian cellist István Várdai performed three Bach Suites at an unusual venue in New York: not the storied glamour of Carnegie Hall or the hip 92st St Y, but the Board of Officers Room in the recently renovated Armory on Park Avenue, a room no less redolent of distinguished history: to which he made his own distinguished contribution according to the New York Times, with a recital which concluded with a ‘superb’ performance of the Sixth Suite.
Bach’s iconic solo suites form the pinnacle of the entire cello repertoire, the ultimate challenge and a Mount Everest every young and aspiring cellist has to climb, no matter how often that has already been done.
Young Hungarian cellist István Várdai is winner of the Geneva Competition, 3rd prize Tchaikovsky Competition 2007 and first prize winner of the prestigious ARD competition in 2014. He embarked on a successful international career, having played with Mikhael Pletnev, Adám Fischer, Zoltán Kocsis, and chamber music partner of Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Andras Schiff, Klára Würtz and many others.

*Rectification: the key in the title of this video is accidentally misspelled as 'C major' instead of 'G major'.
The six cello suites, of which Lucia Swarts plays the first here for All of Bach, have been handed down in a beautiful manuscript by Bach's wife Anna Magdalena, which raises many questions. Bach’s first cello suite became his most famous one. The cellist begins the well-known, comforting prelude in a gentle, radiant G major. The first bars are dominated by the single G, D and A strings, resulting in great resonance.
This recording was made in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. It is the most famous Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history. The room in which this recording was made, was chosen according to paintings that fitted with the Cello Suite in G major.

The Magnificat, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is the first large choral work that Bach composed after his appointment in Leipzig in the spring of 1723. It is an ‘old-fashioned’ but delightful five-voiced work that uses Latin, just like the other rarity among Bach’s works, the Mass in B minor.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 2nd 2014 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating http://bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

Volume 1 of the Complete Concertos by J.S. Bach. Although J.S. Bach used the word ‘concerto’ to refer to many of his church cantatas (the ones that he did not call, simply, ‘Stück’, or ‘piece’), the word’s Italian etymology usually denotes an ensemble work in which a particular element comes to the fore.

Bach familiarised himself with the early Italian instrumental concerto tradition, produced by composers such as Albinoni and Torelli, with his characteristic thoroughness even before producing the Brandenburg concertos which he wrote while Kapellmeister in Weimar, in vain hope of preferment to a more glamorous posting to the court of the eponymous Margrave in Berlin.
The concertos of Antonio Vivaldi swept across Europe from 1711 onwards with the publication of his Op.3 set, ‘L’Estro Armonico’. Vivaldi set the standard for the shape, the style and the virtuosity of what we understand today as the concerto form, perfected in Bach’s own output in the D minor harpsichord concerto, BWV1052. Bach himself transcribed several of Vivaldi’s concertos, both for solo keyboard and for chamber groupings – most famously the B minor concerto, originally with four solo violin parts, which Bach thrillingly amplified for four harpsichords. All this music is contained within this indispensable 9CD set.
The performances here are all historically informed in style, if not all played on instruments either from or closely modelled on those used in Bach’s time. ‘Modern’-instrument performances include the concertos which survive in versions for solo violin – though Bach probably wrote them originally with the harpsichord in mind – in which Thomas Zehetmair is both soloist and director of the Amsterdam Bach Soloists with his characteristically bold and incisive sound and interpretative insight. The oboe concerto recordings are Lithuanian in origin, with Andrius Puskingis again soloist/ director with the St Christopher Chamber Orchestra, in sprightly and mellifluous readings.

The St Matthew Passion performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. Whether or not they are an enthusiast of classical music, practically everyone in the Netherlands knows the St Matthew Passion. Since 1870 the Netherlands has had a rich tradition of annual St Matthew Passion performances. The Netherlands Bach Society was formed in 1921, in reaction to the popular performances by Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The founders believed that the St Matthew should be performed where it belonged – in a church. The annual performance by the Bach Society in Naarden grew to become 'the' Dutch St Matthew Passion.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on April 16th and 19th 2014 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating http://bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

J.S. Bach - The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1: Preludes and Fugues (performed by Sviatoslav Richter)
The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846–893, is two sets of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys for keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach. In the composer's time clavier, meaning keyboard, referred to a variety of instruments, most typically the harpsichord or clavichord but not excluding the organ.
The modern German spelling for the collection is Das wohltemperierte Klavier (WTK; German pronunciation: [das ˌvoːlˌtɛmpəˈʁiːɐ̯tə klaˈviːɐ̯]). Bach gave the title Das Wohltemperirte Clavier to a book of preludes and fugues in all 24 keys, major and minor, dated 1722, composed "for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study". Some 20 years later Bach compiled a second book of the same kind, which became known as The Well-Tempered Clavier, Part Two (in German: Zweyter Theil, modern spelling: Zweiter Teil).
Modern editions usually refer to both parts as The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I (WTC I) and The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II (WTC II), respectively. The collection is generally regarded as one of the most important works in the history of classical music.

The Bachfest Leipzig is marking a special anniversary in 2023: In the year 1723, so exactly 300 years ago, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) took up his post as cantor of St. Thomas Church in the Saxon city. His job involved planning the music for worship in several churches on around 60 days of the year, as well as teaching pupils at the St. Thomas School. To accomplish this mammoth task, Bach composed cantatas at a rate of almost one a week during his first year in office alone.
Philippe Herreweghe, one of the few star conductors for early music, has chosen four cantatas from Bach’s first cantata year in Leipzig, which Bach composed specifically for his Leipzig ensemble and performed between New Year’s Day and the Feat of Epiphany in 1724. Herreweghe is conducting his world-famous ensemble, Collegium Vocale Gent, in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.

The internationally renowned conductor and Bach expert Philippe Herreweghe founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970. Together they perform early music as a kind of historical performance practice. In 1989, the vocal ensemble was expanded to include an orchestra made up of first-class international performers of Baroque music. With the Collegium Vocale Gent choir and orchestra, Herreweghe has since produced landmark early music recordings, including the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach.

J.S.Bach HARPSICHORD Concerto in D Minor BWV 1052 Polina Osetinskaya piano
The Mariinsky String Orchestra
Conductor: Anton Gakkel http://www.antongakkel.org/
St.Petersburg, Mariinsky Theatre, Concert Hall 29.03.2015
0:05 - 1mvt / 8:15 - 2mvt / 16:13 - 3mvt
The life of pianist Polina Osetinskaya can be divided into two stages. The first – that of “wunderkind” (a word that Polina herself cannot abide) – was when Polina performed as a girl in huge halls filled with excited sensationalists. The second, which has continued to the present day, is essentially her victory over the first. It is both a reference to serious performing and to exacting audiences.
Polina Osetinskaya began to perform at the age of five. At the age of seven she entered the Central School of Music of the Moscow Conservatoire. Polina gave her first concert at the age of six at the Great Hall of the Vilnius Conservatoire in Lithuania. Together with her father who accepted the role of manager, the young Polina began to undertake frequent tours throughout the former USSR to packed halls and ovations. In her own country Polina was possibly the most famous child of her time and her relationship with her father was portrayed by the mass media as some kind of soap opera after the thirteen-year-old Polina decided to leave her father and study music seriously at the school of the Leningrad Conservatoire under the acclaimed teacher Marina Wolf.
Polina began to tour once again while still a student at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. (The pianist subsequently completed a postgraduate course at the Moscow Conservatoire under Professor Vera Gornostayeva.) She has appeared with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Weimar National Opera, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg Philharmonic (Honoured Ensemble of Russia), the State Academic Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Virtuosi and the New Russia orchestra among other ensembles.
Polina Osetinskaya’s onstage partners have included conductors Saulius Sondeckis, Vassily Sinaisky, Andrei Boreiko, Gerd Albrecht, Yan Pascal Tortelier and Thomas Sanderling. Polina Osetinskaya has performed at the Wallonie Festival in Brussels, the Mainly Mozart festival, the Frédéric Chopin Festival in Miami, the Stars of the White Nights festival and the December Evenings festival among numerous others.
The pianist has been awarded the Maly Triumph prize. In 2008 she wrote her autobiography Farewell, Sadness, which became a bestseller.
Polina Osetinskaya generally creates unusual and frequently paradoxical solo programmes. She almost always includes works by contemporary composers, frequently justaposing them with traditional classical works: “Contemporary music is not just a continuation of older music. It also helps us discover ideas and beauty in older music that have been lost over decades of the blind museum generation and mechanical and often soulless performing.”
Polina Osetinskaya often performs works by post-avant-garde composers such as Valentin Silvestrov, Leonid Desyatnikov, Vladimir Martynov, Georgs Pelēcis and Pavel Karmanov.
The pianist collaborates with many recording companies including Naxos, Sony Music and Bel Air.

Music and studying: do they go together? According to several studies, they certainly do. The right soundtrack can put you in a better mood, increase your work speed, and calm your mind. But how does classical music do the trick? What are its effects on the brain? Classical music has been reported to enhance brain power if you have it in the background whilst studying, revising, writing, or working. Music reduces stress and improves your mood; boosts concentration; helps with memory and retention; increases focus; and these are only a few of the benefits that come with listening to classical music whilst studying! What are you working on today? Let us know in the comments below and let's motivate each other!
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period. He is known for his orchestral music such as the Brandenburg Concertos; instrumental compositions such as the Cello Suites; keyboard works such as the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier; organ works such as the Schubler Chorales and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor; and vocal music such as the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach revival he has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.

The challenge of this remastered edition was to give homogeneity to a series of recordings made over a period of 6 years in mono and stereo. The Hi-Res treatment (high resolution) has allowed to give a presence never reached before to Glenn Gould's playing. Although Youtube has improved the quality of these video encodings, the sound quality will be much better on platforms such as Qobuz (hi-res) Deezer (hi-fi) ... which benefits from a listening quality without any compression of audio files (see links at the top of the description above).
Clavier-Übung is the German term for "keyboard practice". In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, it was the generic title for collections of keyboard music, first popular after its adoption by Johann Kuhnau, although today the term is usually associated with Johann Sebastian Bach's publication series. At the age of forty, Bach wrote this Clavier-Übung, one of the most important collections of keyboard literature, with an impressive mastery and depth. Here, as is often the case with Bach, virtuosity is a virtue: that of reconciling in a global vision the diversity of Baroque music and language in a demanding balance.
First published separately in Leipzig between 1726 and 1730, the six Partitas appeared in 1731 as Bach's Opus 1. This collection became the first part of the Clavierübung. The six Partitas for harpsichord (BWV 825 to 830), sometimes called "German Suites," are the last major collection in which Bach practiced the keyboard suite, and it is the one in which he reached the peak of his art.

ABOUT MASSIMILIANO
Massimiliano Martinelli is an Italian cellist known for his flawless technique, strong versatility and soul-stirring expressivity.
He made his debut as soloist in 2007, playing Krzysztof Penderecki’s “Concerto Grosso per tre violoncelli e orchestra” alongside the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana (OGI). Since then, he has performed several concerts around Europe and Asia, collaborating with world-famous orchestra such as Riccardo Muti’s Luigi Cherubini Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma (Italy), Jyväskylä Sinfonia (Finland), Sinfonieorchester Basel (Switzerland), Gyeongnam Symphony Orchestra (Korea) and Hokkaido Philarmonic Youth Orchestra (Japan), and has appeared as Guest First Cello at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
At the age of 23, he was appointed Principal Cello in Riccardo Muti’s Luigi Cherubini Orchestra, a role he retained for three years, performing throughout Switzerland, Malta, Russia, Spain and Italy. He went on to audition for the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, where he played First Cello until 2008. In 2010 he was hand-picked by Maestro Daniele Gatti as First Solo Cellist of Zurich’s Opera House, starting a collaboration that lasted six years.
Also a well-known cello professor, Mr. Martinelli teaches at a number of Italian universities as well as at Zurich’s Konservatorium, and hosts various summer courses. He’s taught as Guest Professor at the Toscanini Music University of Ribera, Italy, and in 2016 received an invitation by the University of Hokkaido to give cello and chamber music masterclasses alongside his wife, cellist Fulvia Mancini.
Born in Apulia, Mr. Martinelli studied at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome) with Francesco Strano, before relocating to Basel to further his education with Ivan Monighetti. He has won thirty-three national and international competitions, most notably the First Prize in the International Cello Competition of Liezen (Austria), the First Prize in the Arturo Bonucci Cello Competition, and the Fifth Prize in the Gyeongnam International Music Competition (Korea).
Together with his wife Fulvia Mancini, he is the Artistic Director of the Festival Regina Musica al Castello near Rome. The couple also forms the duo Mr & Mrs Cello, and in early 2019 won a Special Award at the 1st Vienna International Music Competition after the release of their stunning debut EPs, ‘Crossover One’ and ‘Crossover Two’.

Sublime, extreme and all-embracing… only superlatives will do to describe Bach’s Mass in B minor, the 'Hohe Messe', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. In between an awe-inspiring Kyrie and the jubilant final Dona nobis pacem, there are nine completely unique arias and duets, fourteen impressive ensemble sections for four, five, six and even eight voices, a broad spectrum of instrumental solos, and an incredible variety of styles.

Air from Johann Sebastian Bach's 3rd Orchestral Suites or Ouverture No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068.
The Air is one of the most famous pieces of baroque music.
Preformed By: The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Conducted By: Sir Simon Rattle
In cantata 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, everything revolves around the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. They wait throughout the night with burning lamps for the arrival of the bridegroom. Five of them have brought along extra oil to keep their lamp burning. The others run out of oil and go off to buy some more. The bridegroom arrives while they are away.

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artist: Yuan Sheng (piano)
This recording of the complete 6 Partitas is a marvel of elegance, wit, rhetoric and brilliance, played on a modern Steinway.
“China’s premier interpreter of Bach”, is what International Piano Magazine called Yuan Sheng. A pupil of Solomon Mikowsky (Manhattan School of Music) and notably Rosalyn Tureck Yuan Sheng extensively studied the performance practice of Baroque music. Equally at home at the harpsichord he has an instinctive feeling for the possibilities, sonorities and touch of the instrument at hand, so that “the listener might easily have imagined the composer at the keyboard” (Boston Intelligencer). Besides pursuing an international career Yuan Sheng is Professor of Piano at the Bejing Central Conservatory of Music.

In March of 1721, Johann Sebastian Bach carefully inked six of his best concertos into a book for the Margrave of Brandenburg, Christian Ludwig. The original title, "Six Concerts à plusieurs instruments" is now known as the "Brandenburg" Concertos in English or "Brandenburgische Konzerte" in German.
These six concertos represent the summa of chamber music in the high baroque period, and the third concerto (BWV 1048) is noted for its rich texture of three violins, three violas and three cellos, with a continuo part for the harpsichord and violone. The original title is as follows: "Concerto 3zo [terzo] a tre Violini, tre Viole, è tre Violoncelli col Basso per il Cembalo". On the continuo part, Bach has written "Violone & Cembalo", and this is how it is performed in the video, just as it is indicated in the original manuscript.
Brandenburg III makes an appearance in Season 6, Episode 19 “Lessons” of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as the episode "A Matter of Time."
This concerto is part of the Voices of Music Great Works project. A Creative Commons edition of the score, based on the composer's manuscript, will be published to accompany the complete recording, and the recording will be available worldwide on Blu-Ray and CD, and for free on MP3 and high-definition, 24 bit FLAC files.

Perfect to enjoy at the end of a long day, or during stressful times to relieve any anxiety. We hope these pieces of classical music will make your day more peaceful and relaxing. Classical music can be a powerful tool for relieving the stress of everyday life - helping you study, work, and sleep better. What makes Bach's music especially relaxing? Both cheerful and sweet, it's perfect to improve your mood whilst keeping you focused on the task at hand. It’s almost impossible to hear it and not feel relaxed and happier afterwards.
Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period.
