Ukraine is making “modest but steady” progress across its 1,000km front line against Russia, Ukrainian forces have said.

A BBC team has been on the ground with a Ukrainian brigade pushing to reclaim territory in one of the three areas of attack across the front line.

Troops are launching probing attacks, while most of Ukraine's forces are being held in reserve, waiting for a big enough opening in Russian defences to launch a main attack to recapture land in the south of the country.

When Russian invaded Ukraine, the BBC and its partners began painstakingly verifying and counting as many deaths as possible.

We identified more than 25,000 named individuals - people we know to have died - setting a bare minimum for Russia's total losses.

The count provides hard evidence of the war's impact on Russian forces. But it has also given answers to grieving families. Some relatives did not even know what had happened to their loved ones until the BBC traced them.

At least 288 people were killed and more than 800 injured in Friday's incident in Odisha state, involving two passenger trains and a goods train.

Rescue efforts have concluded, with officials saying all trapped and injured passengers have been retrieved.

It is still not clear what caused the multi-train collision in Balasore district, which has been described as India's worst rail accident this century.

People in North Korea have told the BBC food is so scarce their neighbours have starved to death.

The government sealed the country's border in 2020 in response to the pandemic, cutting off vital supplies.

Exclusive interviews gathered inside the world’s most isolated state suggest the situation is the worst it has been since the 1990s, experts say.

It has also tightened its control over people's lives, our interviewees say, making it even harder to survive.

Confira.

President Putin has threatened to target US-made F16 fighter jets if they are supplied to Ukraine.

The Russian President accused the West of seeking Russia’s strategic defeat in the war in Ukraine.

The US President Joe Biden has given permission for Ukrainian pilots to be trained to fly F16s fighter jets. It’s thought that European nations could supply the jets to Ukraine but no decision has yet been taken.

Speaking at Russia’s annual economic forum in St Petersburg, Mr Putin said his country remained strong, despite international sanctions imposed by the West following the Ukraine invasion.

Controversial influencer Andrew Tate has denied fuelling a culture of misogyny and defended his reputation in a combative interview with the BBC.

When the BBC put a range of allegations to him - including specific accusations of rape, human trafficking and exploiting women, for which he is being investigated by Romanian prosecutors - he dismissed them.

This was Mr Tate's first television interview with a major broadcaster since being released into house arrest from police custody in Romania in April.

He agreed to the interview with no set conditions.

Titanic director and submersible expert James Cameron has told the BBC that the deep submergence community had previously raised concerns about OceanGate's vehicle, and had even written to the company saying telling them "you are going on a path to catastrophe".

He compared the Titan's tragedy to the loss of the Titanic itself and her crew in 1912, calling it a "terrible irony".

"We now have another wreck that is based on unfortunately the same principles of not heeding warnings," he said, following the discovery of debris from the sub in the ocean.

All five men on board were killed when the sub imploded.

The US Coast Guard says that a debris field located in the North Atlantic suggests that a submersible missing since Sunday, with five passengers on board, suffered a "catastrophic implosion".

The vessel, which had limited oxygen supplies, went missing deep under the ocean on Sunday after setting off to explore the wreck of the Titanic.

It prompted a massive five-day search and rescue operation led by US, Canadian and French agencies.

The agency offered its condolences to the families of the victims and said it could not confirm if their bodies would ever be recovered.

Many supporters of Ukraine had cherished the hope that this summer might see a military offensive that could liberate occupied territory and lead to peace.

That started early this month, but the Western consensus about Ukraine’s counter-offensive seems to be that it’s too early to say whether it’s succeeding.

So what are the Ukrainians trying to achieve, and how long will it take to see any limit of how far they can go? Newsnight’s Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban explains.

Underwater operations have been relocated to explore the source.
But so far the remote operated vehicles have "yielded negative results", the Coast Guard said.

Warnings over the safety of OceanGate's Titan submersible were repeatedly dismissed by the CEO of the company, email exchanges with a leading deep sea exploration specialist show.

In messages seen by the BBC, Rob McCallum told OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush that he was potentially putting his clients at risk and urged him to stop using the sub until it had been classified by an independent agency.

Mr Rush responded that he was "tired of industry players who try to use a safety argument to stop innovation".

Mr McCallum maintains that nobody should have travelled in the Titan sub.
